Makeup 365 Days 28, 29, 30 and 31 - Playing Catch Up!

Why so many days in this post you ask? Well, someone shot a film this weekend and 3 days were required for prep and recovery. Friday night I had to drive to our shoot location, have a production meeting, witness rehearsal and then set up my station all before hitting the sack for what I think may have been 3 hours of sleep if I was lucky. Between losing my job that afternoon and driving the 1.5 hrs to location before all of the production business that night, I think I get a mulligan on Friday.

Saturday started early. BTW early for me is 8AM and I was awake at 6:30AM. I got ready and to my station by 7:30, got my actors at 8:15 for wardrobe, H&MU and had to have them ready to roll by 9AM. As anxious as I was last week leading up to the shoot day the minute I had a makeup sponge in my hand I was calm, collected and confident (should I start calling this the 3C's? lol). Nothing beats hearing your director say,'Oh my GOD, they look so good!' The director was pleased, the actors were please and that more than made up for all of the anxiety.

Keeping continuity all day kept me on my feet, alert and distracted from the rest of the world (two giant cups of very strong coffee helped also). My always-misplaced alcohol spray bottle, constant need to dab foreheads with tissues and overall need to keep continuity made for a very busy day, but one that I was more than ready to repeat the next morning. I had the most fun I have ever had 'working'. Between takes while the lighting doods moved equipment and lit the next shot I got to chat with the other crew members and the actors. I met such neat people and had a blast shooting this film with them. I learned a ton about every department from lighting to camera assisting to gaffing and loved every single moment of it. My aching body needed a recovery day afterwards, but it was all worth it to get to have this experience with these amazingly talented people.

I have a bunch of BTS pictures on my cell phone, however we had an on-set photog, so those pictures will be shown in a later post. I do have continuity pictures, but didn't ask for permission to post them, so I apologize for not being able to produce two pictures to make up for Friday and Saturday's lack of Makeup 365. I promise you that I did two makeups for those days!

Now to move on to Makeup 365 for yesterday and today. Granted I did both of these makeups today, BUT the first one was simply my inspiration this morning and the second was ... well a little halloween fun ; )

Day 30:
I woke up not feeling my typical Sephora palette mainly because I've worn it to work every day for the last many months and, well, association is a nasty thing. So, that being said, I had a little fun with my Neutral palette from Coastal Scents. Visit them and give them some business. Awesome pigments and not very expensive!

Day 31:
Happy Halloween! Time for a little makeup fun! Quite last minute I decided to do a vampire bite on my neck which turned into vampire-esque makeup on my face.

Makeup 365 Day 27 - Disney Princess makes a movie

I was literally in a mad rush today to go and buy everything I had forgotten until now for this film. I went to two stores (one twice) and then had to pack. I wont say I'm stressed because this is not what my version of stressed feels like. I think I'm being over critical. I'm double and triple checking. Making sure I have every possible thing I could need to make sure the actors are comfortable and the director happy. Please pray that the weather is not a jerk this weekend and that I make it home in one piece on Saturday.

That being said, here is makeup 365: Princess Jasmine!

Tomorrow I will not be posting a blog seeing as I will be on location. Depending on what time I get home Saturday I may do a makeup and possible fill you all in on the happenings on set Saturday. Pray I do a good job! Send good thoughts!

Makeup 354 Day 26 - Au nautrale, bruised again and another year older.

This year I had planned to get a tattoo on my birthday to mark my turning 26 on the 26th, but things turned out differently. I have a film to prepare for, dance rehearsal to go to, work to go to and a makeup blog that I started that needs doing. My birthday also happened to fall on a Wednesday this year and I want my girls with me when I get said tattoo. Have I designed it? Yes. Is it perfect? No. Am I ready to go under the needle? ... maybe? We'll see if the tattoo happens at some later point in time this year when my girls can be with me and I've decided the pain is worth it. For now I'm looking back and seeing what I am thankful for.

I have amazing people in my life who have been beyond supportive of me and my passions. Whether those passions were being a champ Irish dancer (yea, I thought I could), being the seamstress for an upscale kids clothing line (did that for months till the designer took a break), being a jewelry designer (yea, still do that one) or this new-found passion for film/tv makeup and films in general. My friends have all told me that I can do this and on the days where life is ... well, life I need those voices in my head so that my tiny one can be magnified. I need to hear the votes of confidence and not think about the raised eyebrows and shaking heads.

I still have a job. Only the ones closest to me or on my private twitter know what that means to me and the roller coaster that has been. Thank you, God that I still have a job and a pretty decent one at that.

I have found a strength in myself that I didn't know I had. I don't care what people think about how I dress or how I wear my makeup or how I like my hair. I don't care if I sound silly to a celebrity who has heard worse and will never remember me. I leave work at work and come home to hobbies that let me blow off some steam and enjoy my life.

This year brought a lot of growing pains and while they were far from easy and far from fun I am so glad that I had them. I am happy with who I am right now. It looks funny to write that because a few short months ago I feel like I had no idea who I was and then I woke up one morning determined to be a makeup artist. And guess what folks: I'm doing it. Saturday marks my first day on set. Ever. And I can't wait!

Makeup 365 - Day 26

So, just in case you didn't know I'm shooting a film on Saturday. That being said a bit of trial was in order for the look we're going for Saturday. Especially when I have never done it before. The look is very natural. By very natural I mean the wife has just woken up. Basically no makeup at all. Now, if you have been paying attention you realize that even woman on tv who look 'natural' are wearing makeup. Whether I have told you this or you have noticed or read it somewhere, you know that everyone in film and tv wears makeup. With (I think) the exception of certain indie films (For Lovers Only?) where men tend to not wear any makeup, this is the norm. That's right, everyone. Even my fave Nathan Fillion is wearing at least a tinted moisturizer and lip balm. Very manly. ; ) Now that we have cleared that up, here is my attempt at looking like I just woke up.

Makeup 365 Day 25 - Malibu Barbie has some nerve

This week marks possibly the strangest mix of excited and nervous I have ever been. My first ever film shoot is Saturday. Part of me knows, KNOWS, I can do this and I will do a great job, but there is a nagging feeling in my guts that something will go wrong, the actors wont look natural and I'll piss off the director. While the multiple emails and conference calls have lead me to believe that is so totally not the case I'm still ... anxious. Yes, I like that. Anxious. My friends are saints and all have the utmost faith in me which helps so much. I just keep repeating "Please, God, let me do a good job. Please let me do another film. Please." I have enjoyed this experience so much already and it has only been the pre-production stuff. I want to do this for the rest of my life. If I survive this weekend and our small shoot day next Saturday then I will know whether or not I am truly meant to do this. I desperately hope so.

Alright, on to makeup 365.

Makeup 365 Day 23

I am exhausted tonight. Absolutely exhausted. I don't know if that is because this is my last week before shoot day one on NJR and I have about 90 things to do or if I'm just plain tired. Whatever. Anyway, Makeup 365.

Makeup 365 Day 20

Back to my old self and my love of editorial makeups tonight! I did something rather difficult today (rather grown up if I do say so myself). I gave up an opportunity because I was under qualified. I knew I was under qualified and that my skills are not what they need to be in order to complete the project timely and with precision. That in itself is a big step for me. I don't like to say no nor do I like to quit. Anything. Ever. I'm stubborn. Blame my Irish roots, blame my single mother for raising me to be a strong independent woman, blame the voice in my head telling me I can do this. Whomever you choose to blame for my stubbornness it all boils down to the fact that today I ignored it and was professional about the whole thing. I let it go with grace. I learned to say no today. Small steps.

I might add that as a reward I got a mani/pedi with my momma and a friend and then promptly dropped half my paycheck on a rockin' leather jacket (happy early birthday to me). Awesome. Now on to the makeup!

Makeup 365 Day 21 - Bruises!

An amazing thing and a crappy thing happened today. I suppose that means they cancelled each other out and I had a 'normal' day. When I got home from work I had packages and one of them contained a bruise wheel from Kryolon! Whoo! Ebay is quick sometimes. So, naturally tonight's makeup will be bruises. The kind of crappy thing really doesn't deserve mentioning except to say that I grew up a little tonight. The end. Makeup 365 day 21:

Makeup 365 Days 19 and 20

Makeup 365 Day 18 - An Ode to KB

So, I went in to work late today and as I got myself up and dressed realized I had dressed rather Beckett-ish today. With that in mind I decided my makeup would follow suit. So, forgive my nerd heart, but here is an ode to KB. I am no where near as gorgeous as Stana Katic, but her lovely glam makeup every week isn't too difficult to replicate  for a daily look (thank God). No offense to the makeup artist working tirelessly to keep her looking that gorgeous. I lack a few things like eye brightener and the like, not to mention the exact cosmetics used, but I gave it my best. So, without further ado, my version of  Beckett's makeup.

On the off chance you don't watch Castle(are ya nuts?):

Makeup 365 Days 14, 15 and 16 - Getting by with what ya got!

This passed weekend I was part of a yearly ritual in NYC where all Nerds in the tri-state area converge and celebrate being, well, nerds. New York Comic Con was an experience, an adventure and a hell of a lot of fun. I met the lovely Jewel Staite and got to hear the hilarious Steven Lang speak twice over the weekend. Having a good time and shopping with my girls was wonderful as well. I came away with some adorable t-shirts and a few little gems. Loved it. Can't wait for SDCC in July with them!

That being said, I had to do with what I had this weekend. That meant three looks from one small makeup bag that I packed. No palettes, no multitude of foundations, eyeliners or brushes. I had to deal with 5 eyeshadow colors, one foundation, two blushes, one eyeliner, two lip colors and 5 brushes (blush, foundation, eyeliner, powder and eyeshadow). And I did it, folks! Three looks from one tiny bag of makeup. You can do it too!

Sephora's tiny palettes are awesome for a weekend-worth of looks. Loved my time at comic con and my makeup all weekend! Happy Nerding!

Makeup 365 Day 12 - A little dusting, if you will.

I can safely say that I really like tonight's makeup. I mean really like. I will probably never say the word 'love' in reference to something I create ... it's an artist thing, sorry, but I really really like this one.

It took a bit of trial and error to figure out how to get eyeshadow that had been pressed to powder like I did. I used far more eyeshadow than I should have probably, but it was so worth it. I really like my results. I wound up using a stiffer crease brush, loosening some of the pressed powder and then flicking it on to my cheek by smacking the brush against a finger or running a finger over the bristles. Seemed to work just fine. Hope you like!
