Makeup 365 Day 6

So tonight I opted to do another project from this gorgeous book called 'Makeup Is Art: Professional techniques for creating original looks'. Tonight's look gave a tip for making a smoky eye with gel eyeliner (my fave) and I attempted it. You will see what I'm talking about when you look at my pictures, but I either didn't let the liner dry enough or I need to not use waterproof gel eyeliner when trying this technique. I'm sure it will come up again in future projects, but for now I'm not happy. Nor do I like my pictures, but seeing as I'm an amateur photog with a nice camera that I'm still learning about I ask you to forgive me and my lack of decent self portrait skills. On to the makeup!

See what I mean? Definitely need to work on that gel eyeliner technique. That one will definitely come up if I'm ever working a fashion photo shoot. On to the next ...

Primers, Primers Primers!! Oh, and Makeup 365 Day 5

I have heard several people over the passed few months tell me that they 'don't wear foundation every day because it only lasts for a few hours.' Ladies, ladies! There is a solution to your 'few hour' foundation problem. That solution is a genius invention called primer. I personally use Smashbox Photo Finish original primer daily and come home from work with my foundation perfectly in place. I have even gone to my 2.5 hour dance class and come home with it still intact. I do not recommend sweating for two hours under a foundation (unhealthy and causes breakouts), but it certainly put the primer to the test! I also use Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion daily. I haven't had an eyeshadow crease since! Both of these can be purchased at Sephora for under $20. The Smashbox .5 fl oz tube is $17 usually found by the register and the Urban Decay .37 fl oz tube is $19. Now go, use and enjoy flawless makeup that lasts all day!

Makeup 365 Day 5:

No project today. Between work and dance I have very little time and once home from dance I tend to shower and collapse on the sofa for some tv. So today I will simply show you what I do on any normal day.

Makeup 365 Day 4

Day 4! Upon reviewing my pictures I realized I never put on my mascara ... oops! Anywho, today I came home from work and started to hard core makeup shop online for this film that I'm doing at the end of the month. Doing these projects is starting to scare me a little. I know I have a lot to learn which is why I started this whole thing (and for fun, let's be honest), but there is a voice in my head filled with doubt. Too bad. Gotta plow through. Found a nifty site in my travels today: http://www.fxwarehouse.info/ Awesome stuff. I'll be buying from there for future projects (tattoos, scars, wounds, etc.). Now, on to day 4!

Forgot mascara, need more eyeshadow palettes and really need to learn some things. Keep repeating 'learning experience, learning experience, learning experience'.

Makeup 365 Day 3

Day 3! Lots happened this weekend. Last night we had a rockin' production meeting conference call for NJR and tonight I met with a lady who is looking for a stitcher for her sun-wear clothing line. Yea, I asked 'wth is sun-wear?' also. Basically it is fabric with UV protection. Looks like I have a sewing gig! Let's hope I can stay busy and organized and continue to do everything I love, hold down a full time job AND still have a life. We shall see! Now... on to the makeup!

Truely not the best I could do, but part of this whole project is for me to learn and use different products. Hope you're all enjoying so far!

Makeup 365 Day 2

Woke up this morning with blah for hair and no time, so I resorted to an old standby for quick mornings: 1940's-50's natural. I threw in a red lip for kicks and because I bought a new red lipcolor last night and wanted to try it. I got compliments like crazy at church.

Makeup 365

Hello, my lovelies! It has been far too long since I have blogged let alone blogged about anything makeup related. In the passed two weeks I have flailed over several amazing makeup things such as a behind the scenes look at 'True Blood' (holy gross vampires, Batman), the 'Fringe' season premiere (nasty stuff with silicone prosthetics) and 'The Vampire Diaries' lovely 1920's costumes yet lack of 1920's sweetheart lips (sad panda). In my travels through the gobs of books and internet research I have been doing I have learned so many amazing things. For those of you who want to attempt the film industry like I do I highly recommend you buy and devour 'The Makeup Artist's Handbook' by Gretchen Davis + Mindy Hall. This book seriously tells you everything you need to know before you hit the set from color theory to what to keep in your set bag. I didn't even know you needed a set bag let alone a set chair and 3/4 the supplies that the pros need. Detailed lists of supplies are in this book as well as step by steps on tattoo cover up and several other incredibly useful tips. There are also entire chapters devoted to hair and design as well as all of the 'tech stuff' that we all either need to know or would love to know. Absolutely awesome book. Go buy it and learn lots!

Now on to my next venture: Makeup 365. I am going to attempt to do one makeup per day every day for 365 days. This can be anything from a copy from a magazine to gore makeup to my daily makeup, but evey day there will be a new one. Today is day number one, so here it is!

Now, if the books and reading like crazy has taught me only one thing it is proper skin care. Before I put any makeup on I put on a cleansing lotion and a toner. My brand of choice is Lush because of the 'all natural' blah blah. I use 9 to 5 and Breath of Fresh Air ever day before I put on my primer. About twice a month I use Lush's Lettuce Love face mask which is amazing for normal skin like mine that is slightly oily and slightly dry in spots with occasional acne from long periods of wearing makeup.

Drum roll please .......

I took a few liberties simply because I liked the colors and because it was what I had. Here is to the start of something fun and exciting!

Patience is a Virtue

I'm not a superstitious person, never have been. In the theatre community one does not talk about jobs you have merely applied for or auditioned for until either you have strong confirmation or a signed contract. I break that mold in that I tell my closest friends and family everything because, frankly, good thoughts, encouragement and prayers are what keep me moving forward when I have days where life gets in the way of my dreams. The other day a dear friend of mine sent me a message asking me how I stay strong and focused when life gets in the way and makes you falter and in turn doubt yourself, your dreams and absolutely hate everyone around you who is happy. The truth is, there is no instruction book. There is nothing and no one telling me how to get through it and, God love her, my mother sees the good job I have and thinks I'm insane for even thinking about going into the film industry. I cant fault her for that. She loves me and wants security for me, but I drown when I'm in this environment, so I dream of loving my job so much that it's not work. But back to my dear friend.

Like so many times in just the passed few months since this bit of inception entered my noggin', my darling was having a day where life, for lack of a better word, sucked. She hadn't gotten where she thought she should have been at this age and it was bogging her down, depressing her and making her hate everyone. I have so been there. What I told her I will now tell you. Life, and by life I mean every day life such as the job you have to work to live and the place you have to be in because you can't afford to be anywhere else. Life is a stepping stone. Life is the thing that gets in the way and makes you realize you're still not there. But we are all where we are for a reason. I couldn't have imagined the last few years without my dear friend and even if that was a small thing, sometimes the small things are what matter the most. If I was already off in NYC or LA and working right now I wouldn't have been here for so much that has happened this year.

This brings me to the point of this post. I was wandering around on Craigslist the other day looking at the jobs section to see if just maybe I might find a MUA looking for an assist. In my city things are slim pickings. Nothing films here, so I came up short. On a whim I went back and decided to look under the gig's section. There is a whole new world under that link called 'crew'. It wasn't overly populated with film makers looking for crew, especially inexperienced crew, but I did happen across a listing that interested me. I emailed the producer/director/writer and pitched myself to them. Color me happy, this girl's got her first gig! I have read the script, it'll be a short film and as it's a senior thesis film that is all I'll say, but *insert happy dance* I haz a gig!

This feeling I'm getting researching these characters and plotting their costumes and makeup looks is amazing. I certainly hope every new project continues to feel this way. I hope one day I get to do this every day and wake up at ungodly hours like 3am for a crew call and that I have to wash a MUA's brushes for two years sometime soon. I'm eager and I've gotten my first taste. I was recently reading an interview with someone who inspires me and she said something along the lines of: "know what your dreams are and be sure of it before you try to make them come true." I have started and stopped so many things that I can without a doubt tell everyone that this dream is sticking. I wake up every day and can't wait to do my makeup. I can't wait for my lunch break or the end of the day so I can come home and read more about makeup and skin care. I ordered a few books about a month ago and have been devouring them. I feel like I will never learn it all and I like that. I like knowing I can learn something new every day. Somewhere in this giant makeup love fest I promise you I do other things like ride my horses, go to dance class, make some jewelry and even read books not devoted to makeup. I'm not nuts I just have a passion. A passion that I can only pray will one day be my job.

Next post I'll review some of the books I've been reading and let you know what I've learned from them. Trust me, I've learned tons!
